16th June 1815, Belgian and Dutch troops of Wellington's Army were holding a crossroads called Quatre Bras (four arms) south of Brussels. Marshal Ney was attacking with a large French army and the allies were loosing ground. Wellington had to hold the crossroads or risk being separated from the Prussians. Having marched through the night, Scottish Highland Regiments were arriving on the scene to re-enforce their battered allies. Shoulder high crops filled the fields as they began to form their firing lines. "Lancers!!! Lancers!!!" the cry went up as the French cavalry suddenly appeared out of the tall rye grass and battlefield smoke.
