The Light Battalions of the King's German Legion occupied the farmhouse 'La Haie Sainte' at the centre of the battlefield at Waterloo. The KGL soldiers came mainly from the German state of Hanover which Napoleon had invaded 12 years earlier. They had fought bravely with Wellington throughout his 'Peninsular' campaign and he trusted and respected them. The 2nd Light Battalion KGL had very similar uniforms and rifles to the famous British 95th Regiment. They held the farmhouse until 6 pm against thousands of advancing french infantry and fought with swords and bayonets when their ammunition ran out. Only a handful managed to escape the burning ruins, but their brave defence was admired by all.
